Best Schools in Clearfield, Utah: A Parent's Guide

Most families searching for a home in Clearfield start with a school name they heard from a friend, a coworker at Hill Air Force Base, or a listing site. Then they buy a house three streets over and find out in August that the boundary line runs right down the middle of the block.

This is a plain guide to the public and charter schools serving Clearfield, Utah — every school inside the city, what grades each one holds, where it sits, and how to check for yourself which schools any specific Clearfield address actually feeds. Clearfield is part of the Davis School District, the second-largest district in the state.

How school grades are organized in Clearfield

Davis School District does not use the middle-school model many families move here expecting. There is no 6th grade middle school and no 9th grade high school. The split runs like this:

Two things worth knowing about that list. First, it is the schools located in Clearfield — not a boundary map. Clearfield shares borders with Sunset, Clinton, West Point, Syracuse and Layton, and Davis School District draws its boundaries by neighborhood, not by city line. A home on the north edge of Clearfield can be assigned to a school in Sunset, and the two sections below show just how much that happens at the junior high and high school level here. Second, kindergarten registration is handled through the district rather than at the school office, so a school website showing “Grade 1–6 enrollment” is not telling you it has no kindergarten.

Junior highs serving Clearfield

This is where Clearfield surprises people. Only one junior high sits inside the city — but on Davis School District’s published boundary maps, five different junior high boundaries reach into Clearfield. Which one your children attend depends on which part of the city you buy in.

North Davis Junior High, on State Street near the center of town, is the one physically in Clearfield and the one most Clearfield families attend. But if you are looking at a house north of 800 North, west of 1000 West, or east of the freeway, do not assume North Davis. Sunset Junior High even shares Clearfield’s 84015 zip code, which is exactly the kind of detail that makes an online school search wrong.

High schools serving Clearfield

Same story, one level up. Clearfield High is the city’s own high school and serves most of it — but three high school boundaries reach into Clearfield, and the two dividing lines are ones you can see from the car: I-15 and the rail corridor on the east, and roughly 1000 West / Pacific Avenue on the west.

Clearfield High is the Falcons, and it is a big school — 2,041 students in grades 10 through 12 as of the 2024–25 federal count. The campus recently added a Career and Technical Education building, which matters more here than it might elsewhere: Clearfield sits at the door of Hill Air Force Base, and a lot of families in this city work in trades, aviation, logistics and defense contracting. Hands-on CTE coursework is a real pathway for kids here, not a consolation prize.

Two practical consequences. A family buying on Clearfield’s west side may find their teenager is assigned to Syracuse High rather than Clearfield High — which changes the drive, the friend group and the Friday night game. And because the Clearfield High boundary reaches out into Sunset and eastern Clinton, plenty of “Clearfield High families” do not live in Clearfield at all. Treat “we’re in Clearfield, so we’re at Clearfield High” as a question, not an answer, until you have run the lookup below.

Charter and online school options

Utah charter schools are tuition-free public schools that sit outside the district boundary system. You apply, and if there are more applicants than seats, a lottery decides. Living in Clearfield does not give you priority, and living somewhere else does not shut you out.

Dual language immersion near Clearfield

Families ask me about this constantly, so here is the straight answer: Davis School District runs dual language immersion, but no Clearfield elementary school hosts a program. The two closest Spanish immersion schools are both in Layton.

Two details that change plans. Immersion starts in 1st grade — if you are relocating with a 4th grader who has no Spanish, there is usually no way in. And placement is a lottery, with applications generally running February through March. If immersion is the reason you are moving, tell me early, because it changes which side of Clearfield makes sense for you.

How do school boundaries actually work here?

Davis School District draws an attendance boundary around each school and assigns homes to it. The boundary follows streets, canals, the freeway and school capacity — not city limits and not zip codes. That is why two Clearfield houses a mile apart can be assigned to different junior highs, and why your neighbor’s answer is not your answer. In Clearfield the big dividers are the ones you would expect if you have driven the city: I-15 and the rail corridor cutting the east side off, and the 1000 West / Pacific Avenue line cutting the west side off. Boundaries also get redrawn when a school fills up or a new one opens — the district’s own boundary map already shows a new junior high planned west of Clearfield, not yet built — so a boundary that held for ten years can move.

How do I check which schools a specific Clearfield address feeds?

Use the district’s three lookup maps on the Planning page, one for each level, with the full street address typed in. Do not rely on the school list shown on a listing portal, and do not rely on what the seller tells you — sellers are often repeating what they were told when they bought, and the boundary may have changed since. What is open enrollment, and how do I get my child into a school outside our boundary?

Davis School District calls this a boundary permit. You are asking to attend a school you are not assigned to, and the deciding factor is whether that school has room. Popular schools fill fast, which is why the early window matters so much.

Here is the part almost nobody knows: elementary and secondary permits run on two different calendars. The timeline below is the secondary one — junior high and high school.

For an elementary permit, throw most of that out. There is one application window — November 15 through the end of first semester of the following school year — and no late window at all. Miss it and you wait a year. Decisions are not immediate either; principals weigh capacity, staffing and grade-level space as enrollment shifts through spring and summer, and parents may not hear a final answer until the Friday before school starts. Kindergarten has one more wrinkle: you must apply in person at the school you are requesting, and also register at your boundary school.

A boundary permit is not a promise of transportation. If you get one, you are usually driving.

How does a charter school fit in?

A charter is a separate public school with its own application, its own calendar and usually its own bus situation — which is to say, none. Families sometimes use a charter as a reason to buy in a cheaper part of Clearfield. That can work, but plan on driving twice a day for years, and have a backup plan if the lottery does not go your way. The assigned neighborhood school is the one you are guaranteed.

How much do schools affect home values in Clearfield?

Less than in some Utah cities, and the reason is worth understanding. Clearfield is one of Davis County’s more affordable places to buy, and much of the demand here comes from Hill Air Force Base employment and from buyers priced out of Layton, Farmington and Kaysville. Those buyers are led by price, commute and lot size first. Boundaries still matter at the margins — a well-regarded elementary a family can walk to is a real selling point, and homes near Clearfield High move well with families who want their teenager close to school — but in Clearfield, condition, garage, yard and the state of the street usually move the number more than the school name does.

Where it shows up sharply is on resale timing. If your home is assigned to a school with a strong reputation among local parents, you get more showings in spring, when families move so their kids can start in August. Listing in October means competing for a smaller pool.

Which Clearfield school is the best one?

I will not rank them, and I would be suspicious of any agent who does. Test-score rankings on school-review sites track household income more closely than they track teaching. The better question is which school is the right fit for your child, and the answer comes from a tour, not a number. What I can tell you is which schools any home you are considering actually feeds, and I can tell you what parents in that specific neighborhood say when I ask them.

What should I ask when I tour a school?

• How many students are in this grade right now, and is the school over or under capacity?
• Are there portable classrooms, and are more expected next year?
• Has the district discussed a boundary change affecting this school?
• How many boundary permit students attend, and are you still accepting them?
• What does before- and after-school care look like here?
• How long has the principal been at this school?
